Ages 6-12

Help Me to Think for Myself

Your primary aged child is exposed to a rich learning environment where they develop into an independent thinker through debate, discussion and collaboration. Eager to work together with their friends, these gregarious 6-12 children thrive in highly social communities. The Montessori Elementary Curriculum engages the child’s curiosity through hands-on demonstrations and experiments, and interactive lessons involving group dialogue. Presenting knowledge in an interdisciplinary way, the curriculum comprehensively covers all subjects, and stimulates students to extend into projects of their own interest.  This rich intellectual engagement is the cornerstone of how the children learn how to learn, and develop important skills such as time management, project coordination and self-reflection.

This programme is devoted to guiding your child to learn how to independently think through, interpret and rationalise information, and ultimately go beyond by posing their own questions instead of merely memorising the correct answers or accepting what is dictated to them.

Work Habits

The Montessori approach uses an integrated curriculum which connects learning points across subjects to convey the interconnectedness of all things in our world. Lessons are taught as a coherent and more engaging whole, instead of chunks of unrelated information isolated by subject. Knowledge becomes relevant and meaningful because the learners see how information can connect in multiple ways and are mutually reinforcing. Diverse concepts are introduced through the Great Stories and are then revisited several times with greater complexity as the child progresses through the programme. While integrated learning has become a buzzword for 21st century learning, it has been the Montessori way since its founding in 1907.

Going Out

Going Out experiences are a unique characteristic of Montessori, where students routinely venture beyond the campus to connect classroom learning with the real world; this includes interviewing local experts, visiting museums or exhibits, or exploring places of interest. This experiential learning, initiated and put into motion by the students themselves, cultivates responsibility, critical thinking and real-world skills to become active community members.

MMUN

Montessori Model United Nations is an annual conference in Rome or New York that provides our Upper Elementary students with the opportunity to simulate a UN conference and represent a country in discussing global issues. This life-changing opportunity is typically only available to secondary students in traditional school settings, but in Montessori we begin at the Elementary stage.

i

CAS

Our Creativity, Activity and Service programme involves Upper Elementary students in undertaking initiatives and setting objectives in order to benefit others. These project-based experiences instill kindness and a sense of civic duty, while promoting practical skills such as project management and resource allocation. Examples include producing home-made soaps, candles or jewellery, or growing organic vegetables, to sell to the community and raise money for charity.

i

Student Led Clubs

Our Student Led Clubs give children the chance to lead a workshop based on their own hobbies and skills. Covering diverse interests from Rubik’s Cube to Knitting to Pokemon cards, any Elementary child can choose their topic, then design, prepare and run a club to share their passion with peers of all ages.

i

Student Council

The IMS Student Council empowers all elementary students, regardless of age, to experience leadership and promote community relations. Each year, classes hold elections to determine a class representative that will join the Student Council. Collaborating with teacher supervisors, these representatives initiate and implement projects such as creating science packs and recess activity programmes that will benefit all students, faculty and school community.

Student Wellbeing

Student Well-being is of paramount importance at IMS, and we apply a holistic approach to safeguarding an inclusive learning environment for every child at IMS. Programmes are in place to foster positive relationships, self-awareness, emotional regulation and responsible decision-making whilst balancing each student’s physical, emotional and social needs. Tools, such as regular student wellbeing quizzes, allow the pastoral team to track the emotional state of individual children and identify needs for support and guidance.
