Our Commitment to Chinese

IMS has a deep commitment to enable and support each of our children to become able to speak, read and write in Chinese. We have chosen Putonghua as our spoken language, and thus recruit native-Putonghua speakers, who have a dedication to Montessori and child-centred learning.

Immersive Chinese Learning at IMS

IMS is a bilingual School, where Chinese culture and language are integrated throughout every aspect of the child’s experience. Every classroom, from Montessori First Steps to Middle School, is guided by two teachers, one who always addresses the children in English while the other always speaks Chinese. In this complete and consistent bilingual environment, the child is surrounded with opportunities to acquire language naturally throughout each day. Full-time exposure to two languages along with multi-sensory language materials allow children to effortlessly absorb and experience each as a “living language” through day to day life in the classroom.

Classroom Environment

Much of the Chinese learning that happens in the bilingual classroom is through very natural and daily living interactions with the Chinese teacher and classmates. Real life interpersonal experiences enable Chinese to be internalised, not just acquired, because the language is relevant and fun to use.

Hands-on Montessori Materials

Just like every other subject, learning Chinese in the Montessori environment involves manipulating multi-sensory materials that help your child build their memory of strokes and characters, form sentences, and introduce grammar. Most importantly these materials make learning Chinese joyful and engaging for the child.

Teacher

IMS’ success in shaping confident Chinese writers and readers is rooted in a strong oral foundation where children want to understand and be understood by their Chinese teachers. The 3 year curriculum cements a deep relationship between teacher and child, enabling a seamless continuum in Chinese learning from year to year. Chinese culture, stories and songs are celebrated in daily classroom environment, where teachers share their lives and heritage with the children.

Daily Small Chinese Group

In Elementary, your child will attend a 45-minute-long daily Chinese small group lesson targeted at their current level of speaking, reading and writing. This class matches their developmental need to learn socially and is in addition to their regular bilingual classroom.
