IMS 20th Anniversary Year Highlights

Our yearlong celebration of IMS’ 20th Anniversary Year began by unveiling the student-created 20th Anniversary Logo and sharing the design process which showcased the student voice possible at IMS. (

One of our 20th Anniversary Initiatives was the launch of the IMS Annual Fund at the beginning of the year, after 3 years of cancelled ArtStravaganza Galas. Fundraisers have historically contributed about $1 million towards our operating budget, and enable the teachers to truly tailor and deepen the learning experience of each child. We have added a number of exciting new initiatives, including offering to sponsor any IMS graduate to become the next generation of teachers here at IMS!

Wishing Well & Wish Lists

Tuition covers most of the basic needs of any school, but there are always many items in the Wishing Well & Teachers’ Wish Lists to supplement academic and co-curricular programme development (HK$700,000 annually). Help make the IMS libraries, enrichment programmes in the Arts, music, maker-space, science, sport, and technology possible for our children, and allow our Faculty to create a unique experience with your child in mind. 2019 was the last ARTStravaganza, and parents funded 30 of the 32 items!

Chinese And Dual-Language Resources

The IMS development team has created a bespoke series of readers in Chinese and English for our young learners! Written by our own teachers, with illustrations depicting daily IMS student life, these books are designed to elevate each child’s reading experience. In addition, we are adding Chinese Character screens to each Casa dei Bambini classroom to enhance the children in creating their own Chinese compositions and sentences. We are looking for HK$150,000 to fund these meaningful language initiatives!

Tuition Assistance Programme

Each year IMS helps families who are in need of additional, often sudden, financial support so that IMS families can continue on at IMS (HK$1 million). Over the past two years, the COVID impact has meant we have seen this need dramatically increase, and we seek your support in helping us continue this assistance to our community.

Child Protection Training

The safety of each child is of paramount importance to every person in our community, and this year, we are asking for HK$40,000 funding to invest in resources to facilitate Child Protection Training for our entire adult community including faculty, IMS supporting staff and parent volunteers.

Training For IMS Faculty

From our inception, IMS has supported faculty to attend AMI training to gain Montessori teaching credentials and expertise. While this programme started small and mainly targeted Chinese faculty, it has now grown to a substantial annual investment of HK$325,000 as our faculty has grown in size, training is offered in more languages and countries (notably China), and IMS seeks to cultivate and retain the best Montessori teachers from around the world.

IMS Alumni Training

NEW! It is our dream to inspire some of our IMS alumni who are graduating from uni to pursue a career in Montessori education! We are looking for HK$100,000 to kick start this initiative, and allow us to support the first qualified IMS alumni candidate to gain their AMI teaching credential, and then return to teach the next generation of IMS children! The goal is to raise ongoing funds to sponsor future IMS alumni toward this pursuit.

IMS Annual Fund Created:

Generous donors sponsored Lucky Draw items, and the Class of 2022 graduates drew the winning Lucky Draw tickets after the graduation ceremony. With the incredibly generous help of current IMS families who came forward early on to establish the IMS Matching Fund, along with the IMS PTA’s donation, $2,623,290 was raised towards the ambitious 3.0 million goal, and we still have time for new donors to complete the Annual Fund by our 20th Birthday, 2 September 2022!

It was lovely to have so many alumni parents and graduates join in as we kicked off the year with a “Walk down Memory Lane” to revisit milestones from IMS life over two decades. The IMS Amazing Race, organised by the IMS PTA in November, saw IMS families searching every corner of Stanley in pursuit of clues. This was the first opportunity in two years for the IMS community to get together – and what a day we had!

20th Anniversary Amazing Race 2021

On the IMS team front, after a 2-year hiatus, our staff had the opportunity to reconnect and rekindle our team spirit at our annual staff party. A hilarious evening of fun was had by all! The strength of these relationships make all the difference to the wellbeing of each person, which translates directly to the children and IMS families. (Notice the IMS 20th Anniversary “Merch” on display, much of which was designed and marketed by IMS students.)

IMS 2021 Staff Party Fun

We were so grateful for these opportunities to get together in our first term, even if on a much smaller scale than we had planned. Unfortunately, the Covid Fifth wave in January resulted in children back to learning at home, and required us to postpone our Anniversary Spring Fair and 20th Anniversary Gala. Happily – one of the incredible joys of a school is that frustrations were forgotten the moment our children set foot back in school in April! Throughout this Covid-impacted time, we have been putting every effort into defending against uncertainties by ensuring our teachers continue to feel empowered and fulfilled in their work and passion, and by investing ourselves deeply in seeking how and where we are living out our IMS Values.

Now, what really makes a teacher is love for the human child; for it is love that transforms the social duty of the educator into the higher consciousness of a mission
– Maria Montessori

This love for children remains evident as we walk around school and observe our teachers deep in their lessons. Their thorough preparation of materials, energetic delivery of lessons, and love and caring for the children are what produces the excellent outcomes – despite long stretches of online learning – that we can take delight in sharing with parents. Despite these trying times, IMS children are strong in their academics, confident in themselves, curious about the world around them, and most importantly, secure and happy.

And the latest research highlighting the long-term benefits of a Montessori education: Montessori Children Often Turn Into Happy Adultsadded the science to our experience over the past 20 years!

Welcoming our Casa and Elementary parents back into classrooms for their class Open House was definitely the highlight of the year for many of us: Montessori Magic on full display.

Casa and Elementary Open House

It was such a tearful delight to salute our 20th Anniversary Class of 2022 graduates in June, as they begin a new chapter in their education. Two graduates delivered speeches on behalf of their class, in English and Chinese, and in true COVID fashion, one of them had to join us online due to a positive covid case in her family! The graduates performed a rhythm-only version of “Oye Cómo Va” – a tribute to how creative we can get when we aren’t allowed by the government to sing at school – we all had to get up on our feet and move to the beat!

IMS is what it is because of so many of you IMS parents, who have had the courage to begin with us, and the tenacity to stay the course with IMS and Montessori over the years. We also salute our teachers, who bring their care and passion to the classroom everyday, despite the challenges we have faced over 20 years! We wanted to share with you some of the messages from some of our current and past families – as well as from a recent graduate:

Our 20th Anniversary Year has flashed by, and while it was not as we expected, it has been the embodiment of the resilience, flexibility and unity that is the signature of the IMS community spirit! At the end of the day, sharing the successes of our children is the greatest celebration of all
